Once Were Warriors

Watched a really powerful movie a few nights ago called Once Were Warriors. Its about the lives of a struggling Maori family. The parents drink a lot. The father solves problems with his fists. One son is joining a gang, while another is heading that way. A daughter who finds refuge in her writing but is forced to take care of her younger siblings because her parents don't/can't. A very interesting look at some of the realities of certain parts of New Zealand society.

Once Were Warriors is one of my top 10 favorite movies. It's a cutting look at modern Maori culture.

I'd never heard of it before moving to NZ but I guess we aren't the only ones who enjoyed it because it won tons of awards.
