European Martial Arts

Talie has gone to Taupo with Michelle for the Queen's birthday long weekend. This makes me a temporary single parent.

We decided to go see Swordfighting today and luckily it went much better than last time. The kids really enjoyed it.

Apparently, in the last two decades there has been a resurgence of European Martial Arts (as opposed to Asian martial arts). The particular technique they were demonstrating today used a sword and small shield. The shield is used to protect the sword hand, since it is much too small to protect the whole body. Posted by Picasa

I was actually quite surprised recently to learn about the popularity of this type of martial art. I know of at least two groups here in Ottawa now that take this form of sword fighting training. Apparently they learn chivalry and even how to construct their own chain-mail armor. It is funny though as one of these classes is at the college near where I live and I see these guys walking to class with their long wooden swords and little shields all the time.. lol.

This group's focus is on jousting and the swordfighting is something new for them. In Jan there is a jousting competition...that'd be cool to see.
