Chimp day

On Sunday the kids and I went to the zoo while Talie was at work. This was our second time at the Wellington Zoo and probably our last for a bit. Although there were a couple of really interesting parts, including a great talk about the chimpanzees, I think I'd like to see animals in nature rather than locked in cages.

The chimp talk pointed out that one of their chimps was an artist whose paintings were being sold that day to raise money for a better chimpanzee enclosure....hence Chimp Day. Unfortunately we didn't make it to the auction to check out the works of art. Apparently the paintings lacked yellow in them because the chimp liked eating the yellow paint...which must have reminded her of bananas because the zoo keeper assured us from experience that it tasted like paste, yuck!

I asked the kids what they liked the best and they responded the ice blocks (popsicles)....I figure there are cheaper ways to get ice blocks. Also, unlike most things in Wellington, the zoo was not easily accessible by public transit. We took the train to a bus and missed the connection both ways, leading to a half-an-hour wait and an hour and a half travel time each way.

There is a nature reserve called the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary that is supposed to hold some cool birds. I figure next time we want to see wildlife we'll go there. Its a pretty neat place because they keep it free of invasive predators (dogs, cats, possums, etc.) but its much more natural than a zoo.
