While in Christchurch we went for a day trip to Akaroa. Akaroa is, I believe, the only place in New Zealand originally settled by the French and it still retains that heritage. The pubs/stores/restaurants/streets either have French names or have added "Le" in front of English words. It is an absolutely beautiful village with lots of artist workshops. It reminded me of a French Merrickville (a town close to Ottawa).

Down a long windy road, 15 minutes out of town was a Marae
