Sperm whales

On the upper east coast of the south island of New Zealand is a beautiful town called Kaikoura (Kai - food/eat, koura - crawfish). The big draw there is the whale watching boat tours...so at 7:45am we boarded a vessel for our three hour tour, a little like Gilligan. They warned us that the seas would be rough so we took sea sickness pills before going out.

I thought it was awesome!!! At the start of the trip they told us only to expect to see 1 and at most 2 whales. We saw THREE!! Ethan, Noah and I watched the giant sperm whales feed, blow water from their blowhole and dive in the ocean. We also saw a giant Albatross and learnt that they spend up to five years out at sea...never setting foot on land. They have 3 metre wing spans and shoulder joints that lock. They can turn half their brains off to sleep so that they can continue to fly.

Unfortunately, Talie and Julia didn't do as well with the sea sickness. Talie was sick the entire time and Julia was a pretty shade of green. They both caught a glimpse of a whale through the windows. Not as awesome for the girls. : (
